Strengths: Spacious, solid, safe saloon with refreshed interiors and improved exterior styling.
Weakness: Not the most aspirational purchase, the Persona straddles the middle ground between budget saloon and first-rung Japanese saloon buy.
Our view: The Iriz-with-a-boot Proton Persona has had some nips and tucks both externally and internally which improve its appearance and showroom appeal. Practical and the best-built of our national car saloons.
Is this now the top budget saloon?
The video here is from Proton itself, perhasp not exactly impartial for now, though it does highlight some of the key new features in the Persona. Once we can take her for a spin, we will add more on that/ There are many minor improvements in the car no one can deny the facelift has been a good job done by Proton to bring the success of the X70 design elements down to the lower models.
The new 2022 Proton Persona now costs from RM45,800 for the Standard CVT auto, so only a minor increase from the 2019 model. With the current tax exemtion, the price is RM45.200. Next up is the Executive CVT auto at RM50,800 (RM50,100 without tax) and then the Premium CVT auto at RM55,800 (RM54,900 without tax).
All cars are powered by a 1.6 litre four-cylinder engine with 16-valves, DOHC and VVT which stands for variable valve timing to give 108hp at 5,750rpm and 150Nm at 4,000rpm. Kerb weights sit just below 1200kg, making the power to weight ratio for the Persona not too bad at all.
Boot space is an impressive 510 litres and with a 40-litre tank, you should get a decent driving range too. All cars have halogen lights and the top two variants also get LED lights. New to the 2022 car is also the sexy centre console with touchscreen and a USB connection behind the rear-view mirror (a very smart but simple feature that avoids dashcam charging cables all over the place).
All cars get ABS, EBD and brake assist so the basic safety systems are there. The top Premium spec gets additional side and curtain airbags too.
All cars get Bluetooth connectivity and 6 USB charging ports of which 1 for data. There is an 8” Touchscreen infotainment system in the Executive and Premium spec. Only in the top-spec car will you get online music streaming, navigation.
Which one to choose?
All the new 2022 Proton Personas are good value buys with their new interiors and better-looking exteriors to go with their previously good build quality and driving ride and handling. If you’re on a budget, the Executive model looks like a good bet at just RM50k but if you want the full safety and infotainment goodies, then it’ll have to be the Premium car for RM5k more. That's a steep increase, but you do get some valuable extra's for it. Check them out!
