Strengths: A great lifestyle mini-SUV for the city, based on the A3 Sportback for the younger audience. Lovely Audi interiors as always especially the new full digital dash.
Weakness: Front wheel drive only so not really meant off-road or rough terrains, the Q2 is a soft-roader meant to dwell only within city limits.
Our view: At this price range this is car you buy to accentuate your lifestyle, and will definitely make you stand out from the crowd. The brand new Q2 is essentially AUDI’s attempt to break into a whole new segment of younger customers with city-running mini-crossover type vehicle.
Which do I get for my money?
Here’s Beng from Aurizn Malaysia at a recent media event together with Kon. She seems to love the drive of the car but sadly is not that impressed with the exterior which she compares the rear of with a VW Polo. Looks like Audi Malaysia has some work to do if they are to get the car to a good enough spec to entice its target audience.
The Q2 is essentially an A3 that has its suspension raised and sharing the same MQB platform, engines and safety system, so it now belongs to the Audi’s ‘Q’ family, to capture the markets’ interests in the growing mini-SUV trend in Malaysia. The Q2 will be going head-to-head with the MINI Countryman, BMW X1, as well as the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class.
In Malaysia, the Q2 is powered by a 1.4 later TSI power plant married to a 7-speed S Tronic transmission that gives you control over the 110bhp (250Nm) power beneath the hood that is fed to the front wheels. If efficiency is what you want aside for the looks and status, the Q2 also has a claimed economy of 49.6mpg, and it is probably the sweet spot of the range, punching hard enough when you need it while fading out at cruising speeds and it is smart enough to run on just two-cylinders when you are really ‘gentle’ with your right foot.
With an OTR price of RM220,000 the Q2 still sits in the luxury range and you will know this when you step into the car. There is plenty of leather finishes to pamper your sense of touch and the interior without fail reminds you that you and your passengers that you are driving an AUDI. Practicality is enhanced with 405 litres of boot space, trading off rear legroom space that makes it a challenge when ferrying anybody over 6 feet tall..
Anything you need to know?
Comfort and safety is the key value proposition offered for the Q2. It offers just enough performance in its ‘just-enough’ size to make driving around town a pleasurable experience. Small enough to park easily and large enough to bring your friends and lifestyle along with you.
The Audi Q2 includes LED headlights with LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and LED combination tail lamps, headlight washers, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors with heating, and parking aid plus with a rearview camera system. On the inside, the cabin gets manual-adjusting semi-bucket seats for the front occupants with height adjustment available for the front passengers, leather/leatherette upholstery, a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, folding rear seat backrests, an interior light package and inlays finished in red anodised paint to invoke that sporty ambience.
Safety equipment for the Q2 includes six airbags, electronic stability control, an electronic vehicle immobiliser, tire pressure monitoring system, power-operated child safety lock, hill hold assist, ISOFIX child seat anchor points with top tethers for the outer rear seats, a frameless self-dimming interior rearview mirror, as well as a deactivation switch for the front passenger airbag. Nestled in the trunk is also a tool-kit and a jack.
Being an entirely new breed, we are secretly hoping that the Q2 is well-received in Malaysia enough for AUDI Malaysia to bring in the Quattro version, which on paper seems to be more promising on its’ ‘excitement’ offering.
