Audi - A7 Sportback

Strengths: Beautiful both inside and out. The Sportback shape applied to the luxury segment also ticks all the right boxes for performance and practicality

Weakness: The usual Audi challenges in Malaysia of badge snobbery and worries about maintenance and resale value.

Our view: Lovely brand new A7 Sportback is a special car with a stunning driving environment. Buy if you want to stand out and wow the naysayers when you take them out for a drive at night.

You’ll see more niceties when you look more closely…

Here’s an unusual video from Autogeful from the launch of the A7 Sportback. Lovely to hear the German speaking in English and giving us his opinion from a standpoint as a fellow countryman.

The new and latest generation Audi A7 Sportback was launched in 2019 in Malaysia by the new bosses at Audi Malaysia from Audi Singapore. You get one model choice which is a sexy 3.0 TFSI Quattro with 340bhp and 500Nm of torque from as low as 1300rpm for an on the road price of RM609,000 without insurance. There’s also a 48-volt mild hybrid system that allows for some fuel-saving too….right Using a 7-speed S-Tronic dual-clutch system, you get a top speed of 250kmh and a 0-100kmh time of 5.3 secs which is very impressive for a luxury car of this size. The driving experience is also typically Audi which is very grippy and safe but lacking a little in the steering feel department when compared to the rear-wheel drive competitors.

You can identify the new model with the full-width tail lights at the rear which also houses a nicely integrated active rear spoiler. The new front face with Matrix LED headlights, slimmer grille and subtle front bonnet creases make for a sexy sports car look even though you’re in a five-door fastback especially in the S-Line trim of Malaysian cars. The best is saved for last however with the wonderful triple digital displays made up of the 12.3" virtual cockpit for the driver, a 10.1 mid-level display for the infotainment and a lower 8.6 display for climate control. Apply CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard as well as the Bang & Olufsen Premium sound system.

Surely it doesn’t make money sense

Audi has some challenges in Malaysia as the usual rivals have got extensive CKD operations which afford slightly lower pricing. Also, the brand is not usually top-of-mind for premium car buyers. This is a real shame because the A7 Sportback is quite an event and when you sit and drive it, you realise that the normal public is very much missing out. The reality is that all big cars will depreciate anyway, so why not choose a car that is a little bit more special and just hold on to it for the long term
